Plasmodia are protozoa. Plasmodium falciparum, P
vivax, P malariae, and P ovale are the only species that
are infectious to humans. P falciparum is the most dangerous because it
obstructs capillaries and venules leading to hypoxia.
When mosquite bites the host, isporozoites found in
the salivary glands of infected mosquitoes is injected inside the host. The sporozoites then invade the
liver cells and inside the liver cells they mature into stage called schizonts.
This schizonts burst releasing thousands of merozoites. This
merozoites then goes on to infect other red cells.
The fever and chills of malaria are caused when these schizonts
ruptures.
